5- Ways To Be A More Consistent Goalie

1️⃣ Develop a Pre-Game Routine

• A structured routine for both practice and games prepares your body and mind for peak performance.

• Include:

Physical warm-up (5-10 minutes to get loose and activated).

Visualization of key saves and scenarios to train your brain.

• A mental reset to let go of distractions and focus on the next shot.

2️⃣ Focus on the Process, Not the Outcome

Control the Controllables: Concentrate on what you can control: positioning, effort, breathing, tracking.

Focus on the next shot: Let go of the scoreboard and focus on stopping the next puck. This mindset creates repeatable, consistent actions.

3️⃣ Practice Game-Like Scenarios

Train with intensity, treating every drill as if it’s a game situation.

• Practice hard so games feel easier—you’ll build confidence and muscle memory.

4️⃣ Learn to Reset After Goals Against

• Mistakes happen; consistency comes from moving on quickly.

Use an anchor like a physical cue, deep breathing, or a phrase. (My personal anchor in college? “Sexy goalie.” It worked for me!)

Focus only on the next save—it’s all that matters.

5️⃣ Review and Learn From Every Game

Watch your game film critically to identify habits or patterns that lead to inconsistencies.

Look for areas to improve, like rebound control or puck tracking.

• Remember: You win or you learn. Stay objective and avoid emotional highs and lows.

Building consistency takes time, but by following these strategies, you’ll be well on your way to reaching your potential.
