Is Analysis by Paralysis Killing Your Game?

EGM Weekly October 23-29

EGM Weekly [Oct 8-14, 2023]

Welcome to the EGM Weekly News update!

I want to personally thank you for subscribing to this newsletter. Here, I will be able to keep you updated on everything happening in not only the EGM world but the goalie world as a whole.

Analysis by Paralysis

Analysis paralysis “describes an individual or group process where overanalyzing or overthinking a situation can cause forward motion or decision-making to become "paralyzed", meaning that no solution or course of action is decided upon within a natural time frame”…thanks Wikipedia.

What does this mean for you as a goalie?

You’re letting your head get in the way of your progress.

It is a fine line to walk between thinking about how and what you can do to get better. It’s another to constantly be doing so much that you’re frozen.

It’s more common than you think.

I skate with goalies every day. The ones that progress the fastest are those who listen, ask questions, test and re-test.

Those who are constantly wondering what they are doing wrong, are solely focused on the outcome and get frustrated when they don’t immediately master a new skill, usually develop the slowest.

Don’t take this the wrong way, there is nothing wrong with being cerebral.

In fact, I love smart goalies. I put an emphasis on developing smart goalies.

What often gets left out in the goalie intelligence IQ is understanding when to get out of your own way.

I get it, you want to get to the highest level possible, but you aren’t going to think your way there. You have to think, act, test, re-test, and have fun.

The telltail sign of a goalie who overthinks is one who is frustrated, angry and miserable on the ice.

It’s impossible to have fun when you’re constantly criticizing yourself.

What can you do?

If you’re truly an over-thinker to the point where you recognize it’s becoming a problem, consider speaking with a mental performance coach.

If you just want to get better and are worried you’re doing the wrong thing, here’s the truth. No one knows what is the 100% correct thing to do.

The formula to success is nuanced and impossible to quantify.

Next week I’ll talk about the 5 things that all the successful goalies I come across have.

Oh, BTW. If you want to take some of the guesswork out of your development, I’ve opened 5 spots in my EGM program. I only open up spots every 3 months so apply now because you don’t want to miss the bonus tools that come with this next cohort!
