EGM Save of the Week!

Be a Student, Not a Follower

This phrase has sparked discussions with many goalies through the EGM Goalie Performance Club (shameless plug, but if you're curious, there's more information about the program online). I'm opening a new training cohort at the end of the month, and there's already a waitlist. If you're on the waitlist, you'll get early access to the application and interview process. If I fill all the spots from the waitlist, the cohort will close to everyone else.

Questioning the Basics

When I first skate with a goalie, I'm always on the lookout for their habits and approaches. While there are fundamental rules in goaltending like squareness, angle, and depth, every coach has their own unique methods and techniques. Some, like my focus on "skate on the post," which might work wonders for one goalie but not another. This is where adaptability and critical thinking come in.

Never Accept Blindly

As a goalie coach, I find it alarming when goalies blindly follow instructions without asking questions. I encourage them to ask "why?" for everything:

  • Why Toe-lock over skate on post?

  • Where should you stand during a 3-on-2?

  • Why play this way against a cross-ice pass?

These nuanced situations require solid answers, and it's my job to provide them. Sometimes, I need to consult other coaches and mentors for different perspectives.

Learning from the Best

Watching NHL stars like Vasilevskiy, Saros, or Demko is fantastic, don't fall into the trap of imitation. Their skill sets and tendencies might not translate to your game. Instead, be a student and analyze their techniques: What can you adapt and refine to fit your own style?

The Scientific Method of Goaltending

Being a student is about learning, adaptation, and evaluation. It's the scientific method applied to goaltending. So, ask yourself:

  • Do I actively ask questions on the ice?

  • How much of my training time is spent in dialogue with coaches and other goalies?

Remember, "be a student, not a follower." Embrace curiosity, seek understanding, and refine your game through continuous learning.
