Transitioning from Off-Season to Game Time: A Guide for the Start of the Season
Key Steps to Maintain Your Performance and Development
Hey P3 Family, It’s been a while.
In our recent Goalie Science Podcast, I had an in-depth discussion with Coach Derek Bujan about effectively navigating the transition from the off-season into the start of the competitive season. It’s a crucial period, and here are some of the core principles we emphasized.
1. Allow for an Adjustment Period
It is entirely normal for the first few games of the season to feel challenging. You have not regressed as an athlete or a goalie; you are simply regaining your game readiness, which naturally takes a little time. It is important to recognize that you should not have been playing at full game intensity all summer, and therefore a brief period of acclimatization is entirely expected.
2. Maintain Consistency with Your Goalie Coaching
Another key point is to remain consistent with your goalie coaching. Often, we see athletes front-load their training in the off-season and then reduce or halt sessions as soon as the season begins. It’s crucial to continue working with your goalie coach, especially at the start of the season. You’ve built technical skills in a structured way, and now is the time to reinforce and build upon them rather than step away from that support.
3. Incorporate Video Review and Analysis
With games underway, you now have the advantage of game footage. Use it. Regular video review is essential. Many general coaching staffs may not have the specialized goaltending knowledge to give you the nuanced feedback you need, so consider seeking dedicated video coaching. For those interested, our EGM Prospects Program is available to help you with exactly that.
4. Continue Your Physical Training
Lastly, do not neglect your physical training. The strength and speed gains you made during the off-season need to be maintained. Consistent training will not only enhance your performance but also reduce your risk of injury and extend your career longevity. If you need an in-season training program, my new Head Strength Coach Ben Vutci and I are here to support you—feel free to click the link below for more details.
I wish you all the best as the season begins. For some, it’s already underway; for others, it’s just around the corner, let’s make it a great one!
